Remington Small Rifle Bench Rest Primers #7-1/2
Box of 1000 (10 Trays of 100)
- Bench Rest Primers: These primers are designed for enhanced consistency, which is critical for precision reloading. They offer less flash and disperse powder more evenly inside the case, making them ideal for accuracy-focused loads.
- Usage: Bench rest primers are particularly useful when developing precision loads. However, for casual or standard loads, they may not be necessary unless you’re aiming for the highest consistency in performance.
Usage in Low Pressure Calibers
- For Low-Pressure Cartridges: In calibers like the .22 Hornet, a small pistol primer is often a good choice. These primers have a similar “soft” characteristic, and their cup strength is sufficient for moderate pressure cartridges like the .22 Hornet.
Primer Comparison
- Winchester Primers: Winchester offers primers in four types: WSP (Small Pistol), WLP (Large Pistol), WSR (Small Rifle), and WLR (Large Rifle). They use the same primer for both standard and magnum loads, which means they behave like magnum primers and often result in larger standard deviations (SD) in velocity compared to other primers.
- CCI Primers: CCI primers, especially their benchrest primers, tend to provide more consistent ignition, resulting in lower SD in velocity. In comparison, Winchester primers may show SDs of 25-30 in velocity for standard loads, whereas CCI standard loads can be much more precise, often yielding SDs in the high single digits or low teens.
CCI Bench Rest vs. Magnum Primers
- CCI Bench Rest Primers: These primers are known for being easier to ignite than regular, magnum, or military-style primers, which may require a harder strike. They’re particularly well-suited for precision rifles and loads.
- Magnum & Military Primers: Magnum and military primers (such as CCI #41) require a harder strike for ignition, which can be a concern for semi-automatic rifles, where a soft primer may increase the risk of a slam fire.
Best Practices
- In Semi-Automatic Rifles: It’s advisable to avoid using benchrest primers like CCI BR primers in rifles such as the AR-15 chambered in 5.56mm, as these primers are more prone to slam fire in these types of firearms. CCI #41 primers are a better choice for these rifles due to their harder cups.
